Job Title: Grain Originator/ Merchandiser
Position objective:
To work in with the grain marketing staff in the purchase, storage, handling and marketing of all grain transactions for both the grain and feed departments. The position will optimize the company’s market share, improve efficiencies, help achieve the cooperatives mission and goals, and result in outstanding customer’s service.
Position Responsibilities:
The Grain Originator responsibilities include, grain origination, seeking new customers, record keeping, safety and maintenance, sales, producer education and other duties as assigned by management. The Grain Originator will maintain a positive attitude and possess the ability to cross sell all areas of the company including grain, agronomy and energy while promoting a favorable image.
Gain Origination
- Contact producers on a weekly basis
- Track customer contacts and keep record of available bushels to purchase
- Demonstrate the ability to use the DTN portal to producers and location managers
- Communicate information from the ISM bid sheet to producers in a fashion that results in building long term relationships.
- Be involved with sharing information gathered in the country with the marketing staff to formulate a successful market strategy
- Ability to communicate with all producers depending on their level of expertise
- Communicate market trends
- Develop market plan and set goals
- Predict local yields, quality, and moistures of new crop
- Estimate bushels that are available for purchase
- Obtain Minnesota crop insurance license and promote insurance as part of risk management
- Willing to obtain Series 3 trading license
Storage and handling
- Coordinate truck transportation for on farm pickup and delivery with dispatch.
- Coordinate with location manager on producer pick up needs.
- Help during harvest time at a location to expand customer contact.
New customers:
Submit list of customer appointments to supervisor prior to the call so additional information can be obtain to gain a sales advantage.
- Ability to explain all ISM contracts and how they work
- Understand the culture of direct sales and be able to offer other solutions
Record keeping:
Recording keeping involves maintaining accurate records, including all record that are grain related and develop and maintain a working knowledge of grain industry requirements.
- Ensure accurate records
- Understand and communicate DPR information with merchandiser

-Scale tickets
-Grain settlements
-Warehouse receipts
-Grading and discounts
-Deferred payments
-Price Later contract
-Delayed Price contracts
-Hedge to arrive
4. Comply with rules and regulations that apply
5. Help with trading the companies dried distiller’s grain position
Communicate company grain policy:
- Communicate the company grain policy.
- Ability to communicate the Fall Policy to producers and locations
- Drying rates and shrink discounts
- Price late and Basis contracts
- Receiving and load out hours
- Additional programs if needed.

- Perform duties as requested by management
