Soil Temperatures at 8:00AM April 16th, 2015 were 46°F at 6” and 47°F at 2”
Saw a few planters in the field yesterday and came across a field that a portion of the field was worked that morning, with the vast majority of the field being worked the day before. The portion of field that was worked that morning had seed furrows that were open in a few areas in the field. Otherwise, the portion of the field that had more drying time looked good.
The spots in the field that have these open seed furrows will be more susceptible to temperature and moisture variations, as well as side wall compaction, now and throughout the growing season.
Just a few quick reminders on planting.
· Allow fields to dry after working ground, work a field today, plant it tomorrow
· Planting Depth 1.75 to 2 inches deep, add .25inch to allow for soil to compress
· Find the sweet spot for planter speed, a Goldie Locks speed, not too fast, not to slow
· Use Ascend or products that help emergence, it does make a difference in emergence
· Remember to be safe
